The Birth of a Dream
(by Glenice Stanley)
I often sit and think of how much fun music and dance gave my life. Growing up there was no TV, computers, stereos - just a wind-up gramma phone.
As a child, my next-door neighbour and I were always busy, planning dance recitals and plays.
We both had a dream. Her to become a school teacher and me, I wanted to become a great dance teacher. We started early in life - I would teach the dance routines and she would take care of the administration – what a great team!
Whenever we could, we would gather friends and neighbours, anybody – anybody who would be willing to take part in our plays. For those that didn’t take part they would pay 1 penny to watch us perform. We were never short of pocket money to buy presents for our family.
I remember taking clothes from mum and dad’s cupboard – we would dress up mops and brooms as actors. We would do anything to deliver a successful performance to our audience.
As a child, so many of my friends wanted to join in and learn to dance. Often for different reasons it was impossible for them – money, time, there could be "a million" reasons.
Many years have passed since those days. Something has not passed. Children still love music and want to dance – it will always be a part of life. It adds a beautiful perspective to life.
My dream is that every child,
regardless of their circumstances
, can through the expression of dance and music, increase the quality of their life.
I developed the Pre-Dance Video series to give every child the opportunity to have fun in expressing themselves through song and dance as I did.
A Lifetime of Dance
(by Glenice Stanley)
It’s hard to believe that 58 years have gone now. I look back at the years and how all this time I have been dancing. I began dancing since I was 2.5 years old.
My dad went to war so poor mum need something to occupy her time. She added some excitement to her life by enrolling me in dance classes. By the time I was four years old my dancing became very serious. Mum made dancing serious business. Very serious business. I would often dance in championships and I would really feel the pressure to win.
I remember one championship in particular. Mum really wanted me to win this one. I was smacked, sent to my room, told she would leave me, told I would be given away. I ended up winning.
I tried so hard. This championship was for highland dancing and I found highland one of the hardest dancing to learn if you wanted to be a winner. After the championship mum would be back to her normal self and I would forget all about the hard time. I loved her as she loved me.
I got to love being a good dancer and winning championships. When I won mum would be so happy. Everyone would make a big fuss and I would always be dancing for charities. People would ask mum if I could dance for them. I was always getting nice things given to me for mum and myself. That was the good part.
When I turned 16 years old I found a wonderful dance teacher who really helped me to become the teacher I had always wanted to be. She allowed me to use her pianist and would often view my students to make sure I was doing a good job. I was so proud when I was teaching my own daughter and she performed on TV.
The years went by. At the age of 27 I decided to temporarily give my class up so I could devote more time to my family. This never stopped me from dancing or teaching. I would always be teaching children who wanted to learn.
When my 7 children were all grown I longed to be back teaching again. I would often remember the good times of dancing. I also remember those difficult times – the pressures I felt. I wanted to teach little ones how to dance without the pressure, just the enjoyment. I decided to develop a special program that would do just that – teach little ones how to dance with fun.
One of my daughters was an exceptional dancer. She was enthusiastic about my idea and helped me to establish Pre-Dance School. So Pre-Dance School went to work in refining a specialised dance program for beginners.
I knew from my younger years that most children love to dance but not all have the opportunity due to different circumstances.
Then came the video. This will enable me to fulfil my dream – a dream that every girl and boy will have the opportunity of being able to dance regardless of their circumstances. Thank you to my mothers, my past teachers, family and friends for helping me.
Small Beginnings
Pre-Dance was first established in 1992 with the aim of giving young children a unique dancing class.
The principal, Glenice Stanley wanted a class that would cater to the special needs of young dance students. These needs included variety, fun, and excitement with the right amount of discipline.
With the assistance of her daughter, and a combined 59 years of dancing experience, Glenice went to work creating and developing a series of specialized dance programs for beginners.
The techniques designed covered various areas of dance including tap, jazz and ballet. Exercise, singing, music and free movement were also incorporated into the programs.
Over the past 7 years these programs have been conducted on approximately 160 children in a class environment. We have seen outstanding results - increased self-confidence, self-esteem and co-ordination. We have also received countless commendations and thank-yous from parents and teachers.
The aim of Pre-Dance has always been to
give every child,
regardless of their circumstance
, the opportunity to have fun in expressing themselves through song and dance.
This aim along with the persistence of her son-in-law prompted the establishment of Pre-Dance (Aust) Video Productions. Years of development and experience have been transferred to a series of video programs, giving every child the opportunity to learn to dance.
Your child can now learn to dance, the fun way at home with minimum time and expense.
Amazing characters will professionally teach and entertain your child. What more could you want from a fantastic video program.
What’s Unique About the Pre-Dance Video Program
The Pre-Dance program is like no other teaching program. The blending of dance education and entertainment fills a specific need for young "wannabe" dancers.
The Pre-Dance program caters to the child and parents need for fun, entertainment with the right amount of discipline. It gives children a head start in life.
Rather than focusing on one type of dance, the program offers variety: tap, jazz, ballet, exercise, singing, music and free movement all in the one lesson. This extent of variety enables parents and children to decide what area of dance would best suit their needs - this in turn, saves much time and money on lessons and equipment when a child is no longer interested in a particular type of dance/recreation.
Teaching aids such as tambourines, "tap boards" and placement mats, makes learning easy and interesting. The three fantasy characters, Penelope Princess, Belle Butterfly and Cassie the Cat captivate young audiences while the use of colour and music maximise learning potential.
The Pre-Dance program brings the lesson to the child, rather than the child going to the lesson.
The programs are professional, highly entertaining and cost efficient.
